Sustainable Development Goals

We believe it is our responsibility to work with people and industries no matter how diverse to ensure the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the planet and the people who live here.

HDL supports where possible the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out by the United Nations in 2015, doing what we can to promote these core values.

Our normal business activities contribute to many of the SDGs in some way.  However, we can contribute to the achievement of some SDGs more directly.

Our SDG priorities, outlined below, reflect the areas that most closely align to our purpose and strategic business priorities. This is where we may have the greatest impact given our role as a leading internationally focussed risk advisory and insurance broking company.

Our priority SDGs

Goal 1: No Poverty

End Poverty in all its forms everywhere

Building the financial and risk resilience of our clients is fundamental to our business. We help protect people, businesses and communities against risk, contributing to their long term financial wellbeing. An accident, illness or disaster can quickly plunge clients into financial distress. Proving insurance protection helps aid this recovery, providing a safety net against poverty and building financial wellbeing.

Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing

Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

HDL is committed to our colleagues well-being, providing comprehensive remuneration and employment conditions with the resources, protection and peace of mind to help them and their families live better.

We continue to be at the forefront of our industry, to make insurance and risk solutions affordable by engaging technological innovations to mitigate frictional costs

Goal 5. Gender Equality

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

HDL is commitment to promoting diversity in the workplace and fostering equitable opportunities and fair treatment of all our people.

We continue to drive gender equality and foster a diverse and inclusive workplace through employee programs and are committed to pay equity which is fundamental to our ability to attract, retain and motivate highly qualified and diverse colleagues who are critical to our future success.

Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

Avoiding the worst impacts of climate change requires the responsible transition to a low-carbon economy as quickly as possible. HDL is supporting providing risk management and insurance services to renewable energy developers.

Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all.

Our strategic focus on innovation and technology enables us to promote economic growth, and the value of insurance as a service enables economic growth helping communities thrive and recover from adversity.

We provide insurance products supportive of decent work such as workers compensation and accident and health solutions. A continued focus on protecting labour and human rights within our business, and across our supply chain, is essential to ensuring that we remain a responsible employer and business partner.

Our Modern Slavery Policy details the standards expected of suppliers in relation to human rights and workplace conditions. This includes ensuring that no forced labour, child labour or involuntary labour is used, and complying with Australian Modern Slavery Act requirements.

Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities

Reduce inequality within and among countries

HDL is committed to an inclusive culture. We promote equality and the inclusion of all, irrespective of age, gender, ability, ethnicity, religion or economic status. Internationally we recognise human rights principles. We focus on diversity and inclusion across our business including fair remuneration.

Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

We are committed to building on our knowledge, products, services and advice, and collaborating with industry, government and other stakeholders to identify sustainable solutions to reduce risk and enhance inclusion, safety and resilience.

Providing resources to guide clients in Northern Australia through effective prevention and mitigation strategies making their properties more resilient to natural hazards and disasters and gaining access to discounted insurance premiums.

Goal 13: Climate Action

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

As an internationally focussed insurance broker we are acutely aware of the risks and opportunities presented by climate change. We use our industry expertise to help clients mitigate these risks and support the uptake of new opportunities and technologies in the transition to a lower-carbon economy.

We play an important role in helping clients in the transfer of risk that extreme weather events require and through our claims management services help them prepare for, respond to and recover from major events.

In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we halted a majority of colleague travel and increased our use of technology as our colleagues primarily worked from home. We also transitioned to “smart office environment” which helped reduce our overall real-estate footprint, minimising our use of resources, further reducing our carbon footprint.

Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals

Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development

HDL proactively participates in public policy advocacy and industry reform, to ensure better outcomes for our stakeholders.

Throughout 2020 HDL implemented an extensive range of COVID-19 client communications and guidance and fully implemented as part of our Code of Practice the provisions relating to support for customers experiencing vulnerability and family violence.
