What is Volunteer accident insurance?

Volunteer Accident insurance can help compensate your Volunteers for certain expenses and lost income incurred as a result of an accident/injury sustained whilst performing work for your organisation, including direct travel to and from the work site.

Some examples of who the policy covers:

  • Committee Members (as long as they are unpaid)
  • Fundraising Officers (as long as they are unpaid)
  • Volunteers acting on behalf of your group
  • Volunteers setting up at your event
  • Volunteers travelling to and from activities

Who should consider it?

It is important to make sure that your volunteers feel confident in knowing that they would be properly looked after if they injured themselves while carrying out their voluntary duties.

State workers compensation policies typically do not cover unpaid volunteers. This places the onus on associations to arrange a volunteer accident insurance policy to provide this important protection.

Financial compensation provided by a volunteer accident insurance policy can include:

  • Lump sum benefits in the event of a serious accident or death
  • Weekly benefits of lost income
  • Cover for non medicare medical expenses
  • Cover while travelling to and from association events and work

Non-Medicare Medical Expenses

Australian Federal Legislation prohibits any general insurer from paying expenses for which a Medicare Benefit is payable.  Therefore general accident insurance policies do not cover medical expenses that attract a partial or full Medicare rebate.  This includes the “Medicare Gap” and any invoice items listed under the Medicare Benefits Scheme.

Examples of expenses general insurers typically cannot pay include Hospital surgery, X-rays and Ultra sounds, Doctors fees, Specialist consultations and Anaesthetists
