What is aviation insurance?

While the aviation industry has stringent safety standards, flying carries some serious risks, both on land and in the air. So it’s important to obtain protecting through aviation insurance.

HDL can help you find coverage across a range of areas including:

  • Physical loss or damage of aircraft hull including aviation spares, engines, components, etc
  • Negligence resulting in physical injury and property damage to third parties, caused by the use of your aircraft or the aircraft itself, including coverage for passengers
  • Hull damage caused by events such as war, hijacking, terrorism and malicious damage and/or riots and civil commotion, etc
  • Bodily injury or damage to property arising out of the use of airport premises, including liability for aircraft, spares, engines, components etc in your care and control plus product liability exposures
  • Negligence resulting in physical injury and property damage to third parties, arising out of the use of hired/chartered aircraft

Who should consider it?

Aviation insurance can cover all aircraft, including light aircraft, helicopter, private jet and even remote piloted aircraft such as drones.

Whether you fly for a living or for pleasure, you should consider the protection offered by aviation insurance.

Importantly, even if you rent, borrow or charter an aircraft, you should seek advice about obtaining a non-owned aircraft insurance policy, as the owner’s policy may not include coverage for permissive pilots, the aircraft may be underinsured or uninsured and even if the owner’s policy pays, the insurance company may subrogate and you may be held liable for the damages.

HDL, the right partner for you.

The ownership of remote piloted aircraft (RPA's) has increased greatly over the last couple of years with hobbyists, government departments and businesses finding the ever-changing technology attractive and useful for their needs.

It’s important for individuals and businesses to protect themselves against the exposures RPA use has created. including:

  • Damage and/or loss to the RPA
  • Damage or injury to third parties arising from the use of the RPA
  • Fines and penalties

For recreational users, several insurers are now incorporating cover for your RPA when used recreationally and in accordance with C.A.S.A guidelines within their home and contents insurance policies.

It is therefore always best to seek advice from HDL regarding cover requirements.

Did you know?

220

In 2019, 220 aircraft were involved in accidents in Australia, with a further 154 aircraft involved in serious incidents (an incident with a high probability of becoming an accident).

(Australian Transport Safety Bureau, Aviation Occurrence Statistics 2010 to 2019)

Aeroplanes

Aeroplanes had the highest accident rates of any recreational aircraft type with the majority of incidents being operational (terrain collisions) or technical (primarily engine failure or malfunction).

(Australian Transport Safety Bureau, Aviation Occurrence Statistics 2010 to 2019)

90%

Between 2010 and 2019, over 90 per cent of accidents and fatal accidents, involved aircraft operating within the general aviation and recreational aviation sectors.

What can it cover?

Depending upon the policy, aviation insurance can cover:

Type of cover Potential benefits
Aircraft aerial application liability
Covers liability arising from chemical drift and is generally for aerial agriculture businesses.
Aircraft hull and liability
This is the primary insurance for all aircraft owners – the policy covers loss or damage to your aircraft; and third party or passenger liability arising from an accident.
Aircraft non-ownership liability
For private pilots, charter operators and other non-owners – the policy covers liability arising from the hire or charter of aircraft.
Hangar keeper’s liability
For businesses operating in and around airports – hangars keeper’s liability can be used in tandem with an aviation business pack to cover liability for damage to aircraft on the insured premises and/or under your care. It can also cover liability arising from the sale of aircraft products or the provision of aviation service.
Remotely piloted aircraft (RPA)
For people who own and operate remotely piloted aircraft cover for accidental damage, plus personal injury and property claims arising from an RPA accident.
Personal liability
Property damages you may have caused or been responsible for, or bodily damage where you are at fault.

Case study

A plane awaiting repairs is damaged when a fire breaks out – caused by someone working on another aircraft in the same hangar.

The plane is damaged beyond repair – but the owner’s aviation insurance means they will be compensated for the value of the plane – so they can replace it with one of a similar value.
